Next autumn will see the release of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, directed by Mike Newell who is well known for his work with the Harry Potter series, and it seems he’s bringing half the cast along (slight exaggeration there) for his new film.
Great Expectations will feature the weirdly wonderful Helena Bonham Carter as tortured soul Miss Havisham, who has been left emotionally unstable, to say the least, after being jilted at the altar. Havisham is raising her adoptive daughter Estella (Holliday Grainger) to be somewhat more resiliant to the hard truths of love, and encouraging her to be cold-hearted by trying to ‘steal’ the hearts of romantic young men and then leaving them all bereft and heartbroken when she’s done – harsh.
The film also features Ralph Fiennes as criminal Madwitch and Robbie Coltrane as Mr Jaggers. However, the film will be centred around Jeremy Irvine’s (of Speilberg’s Warhorse) character Pip – an orphan who unfortunately falls for the cold hearted Estella. The story will follow the young boy’s labour of love after he comes into money, given to him by an unknown beneficiary.
You can see the first two screenshots from the forthcoming film here. With such a talented cast portraying the legendary story, it is hard not to get excited about how good this is shaping up to be. The film will be marking Dicken’s bicentenary, so here’s hoping it’s done well.
What are your thoughts on the cast for the latest adaptation of the Dicken’s classic? Do you think it will work? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
